Last Thursday I learned that I am not as invincible as I might have
thought. It was an unpleasant realization in many many ways. For
you see…
I am awesome. So awesome that my employer moved me into a bigger office
with shiny new furniture. And Thursday afternoon, our IT guy came
into my new office to hook me up to the world and my ginormo new desk
was in his way so I chimed in with, “I can help you move that!” And
I did. And nothing seemed unusual.
Then two hours later, I tried to leave my office and walk down the street
and I barely made it past our courtyard. Something I did when moving
that desk strained something in my back in some kinda unpleasant way. Thankfully,
Steve was at home that afternoon and he came to fetch me and took me
promptly home. I missed class that night (the last class, which
is a bummer, as my teacher had promised to bring treats), staying home
on the couch and wincing whenever I had to move.
In the wee hours of the morning, I was in a helluva lot of pain, so
I woke poor Steve up and made him take me to the Emergency Room. Within
an hour, I was curled up on the exam table with a dopey Percocet & Robaxin-induced
smile on my face. Much better.
I skipped work on Friday and spent the day doped up on my couch. And
so went the remainder of my weekend. I had another class on Saturday
morning, at which I presented my final project, and Steve’s great
big Festivus party was Saturday night, and through all these things I’ve
nodded and smiled with my head floating somewhere in the clouds. If any
of you think the Christmas present I got for you is wacky, it’s
because I groggily did a lot of my shopping online over the weekend.
Today I’m feeling much better. I went back to work and it
should’ve been stressful, as there’s so much to finish this
week and missing Friday didn’t help… but the stress didn’t
really get to me, thanks to my new pharmaceutical friends.
Better living through chemistry!

My blog has been a sad sorry sight for two whole months now. I’ve
got no excuse, other than I’ve been busy, which isn’t a very
interesting excuse. If you asked me to recall from memory what
I’ve been up to since mid-October, I’d probably do a pretty
weak job. Thankfully, my camera has been there to document.
Going in reverse, to shake things up a bit…
12/9:
Christmas! This last weekend was very Christmas-ey. We
went shopping, wrapped presents, hung out lights outside, got a
tree and some ornaments, and created this very loverly (and cat-attracting)
scene. |
|
12/2:
Redskins! My very first NFL game, which I shall
forever remember as the day I got the drunkest I’d ever been
before noon. |
|
11/27:
Cold War Kids! We saw them at Bonnaroo, but we
couldn’t see very well. This show, at the 9:30 Club,
was AWESOME. |
|
11/24-25:
Colonial Williamsburg! Steve and I drove down the
day after Thanksgiving (which we tastily enjoyed in McLean with
Steve’s family) and had a great time drinking hearty beers
and having brushes with law enforcement. |
 |
10/31:
Halloween! We carved pumpkins. Steve’s got moldy
and gross, which added to the zombie-like effect. |
|
10/27-28:
Outer Banks! Along with Steve’s other bandmates,
we drove to the Outer Banks to watch his drummer get married. We
got to splash around in our finery, and spent some time at
the Wright Brothers site (where I bought a kite). |
|
10/13:
Punkins! This was
a very charming fall Saturday spent in Midland, VA picking pumpkins,
wandering through a corn maze, and getting attacked on a haunted
hayrack ride. |
